Children's Trust/Roald Dahl Foundation

The following are extracts taken from from a press release issued by the Children's Trust in March 2004 on the occurrence of being selected to receive the 2004 Roald Dahl Foundation's Quentin Blake Award.

"The funding will support the services of a storyteller who will be able to open up the wonderful world of stories and imagination for the profoundly disabled children in its care, as part of their therapy and leisure activities. The additional drama workshops will be aimed at children who have suffered a brain injury or who have other neurological conditions."

"Janet Dowling, from Ewell, a professional story teller with 20 years experience and an incredible source of 150 stories in her memory, visits the Trust every week to bring alive the wonderful stories and characters from children’s favourite books. The importance of story telling became evident during her career as a psychiatric social worker, where her expertise acted an invaluable tool for therapy and counselling."

"Janet visits The Children’s Trust on a weekly basis, to bring to life the most wonderful characters and exciting story lines in some of children’s most famous books. About her work at The Children’s Trust, Janet said: “Story telling allows the children to hear the pattern of the words, helps them to recognise the story and anticipate what is going to happen next in the narrative. You can build up the tension in the tone and pace of your voice, and the children can really respond to that, even if they are not able to fully understand the story. Story telling is not only an enjoyable experience for these very special children, it also gives me a great deal of satisfaction to know that I have made a difference to being able to make them aware of the wonder of stories which we all take for granted.”"

"Quentin Blake said  “I am delighted to be involved in this Award, not only because story telling and drama are near to my heart, but also because the Award shows that both the medical and literary interests of the Roald Dahl Foundation live happily together.”"
